Venezuelan FM condemns human rights violation in Colombia

Caracas, Oct 30 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela’s foreign minister, Jorge Arreaza, on Wednesday urged the international community to express themselves against the serious consequences of violence reinstalled in Colombia and the permanent violations of human rights.

Following the murder of eight members of the neighboring country’s indigenous community the day before, without a statement from the Colombian state, Arreaza sent a message of solidarity from the Bolivarian people and government via Twitter.

In this regard, he pointed out that Venezuela repeatedly condemned human rights violations and massacres of social leaders, indigenous people and ex-combatants carried out by Colombia’s ruling class.

The Colombian Senator of the Special Circumscription, Feliciano Valencia, said that this new attack, that took place in Tacueyo, north of Cauca, is part of a chain of threats and selective murders against members of the guard and community members of the region, which have been denounced by traditional authorities, as well as by indigenous and social organizations.

Since months ago, the national government has been alerted about the presence of illegal armed groups, which put the indigenous community at extreme risk, with an unfortunate balance of 14 assassinated Nasa people of northern Cauca during the current year, Valencia explained in a statement.

Valencia demanded that President Ivan Duque address this situation immediately; ‘the omission of these events contributes to the indigenous genocide,’ he said.
