Uruguayan FM Asks for Presence of Cuba in Summit of the Americas

Montevideo, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) Cuba must be present at the next Summit of the Americas as any other country of the region without any conditioning, said Uruguayan Foreign Minister Luis Almagro, quoted by the weekly Busqueda. Busqueda refers to a document entitled ‘Hacia una nueva visión estratégica para la OEA (Towards a new strategic vision for the OAS) presenting Almagro’s proposals to renew the the OAS, and recalled that the meeting will be held in Panama next year.

The text was distributed to all members with the postulates of the Uruguayan Foreign Minister, who is candidate for Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), according to Busqueda.

Among other topics, Almagro considered it unjustifiable that there is still a country under a de facto exclusion from the OAS, referring to the suspension of Cuba in 1962 in Punta del Este Conference.

Effective reentry of Cuba to the OAS has become a milestone in the history of our organization, he said.

Almagro stated that changing the OAS must fall under a ‘new strategic vision generating realistic, but also ambitious goals.’
