Prominent World Experts on Diabetes to Attend Forum in Cuba

Havana, Cuba, Sept 20.- More than 30 world leaders in diabetes have already confirmed their attendance to the International Congress “Controlling Diabetes and its Most Severe Complications,” to be held in Cuba on December 10-12.

Dr. Manuel Raices, scientific secretary of the meeting, which will have the Varadero Convention Center in Matanzas as its venue, told ACN that among personalities traveling to Havana to participate in the forum is British Sir Michael Hirst, President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), an organization that brings together some 230 national associations of over 170 countries.

The scientist of the capital’s Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology –the institution that developed Heberprot-P-, said that the application of this medicament, the only one of its kind in the world to treat diabetic foot ulcers, has reduced by over 78 percent the relative risk of amputation for this cause in Cuba, thanks to the implementation of a comprehensive program spread throughout the country.

Cuba doesn’t escape the world tendency of the increase of prevalence. According to estimates by the IDF there are some 870,000 diabetic patients in its territory, an amount that has considerable increased over the last few years, if we take into consideration that there were 350,00 a decade ago, he added.
