International Climate Change Convention Concludes in Cuba

Havana, July 5 (Prensa Latina) Experts agreed on Friday on how important it is to reduce damage caused by disasters in the Americas and the Caribbean through a comprehensive practice prevention by analyzing and scaling down risk factors.

Raul Salazar, director of the United Nations (UN) Office for Disaster Risk Reduction in the region, spoke at the closing session of the 12th International Convention on Environment and Development.

Examples of actions to reduce risk disaster included reducing exposure degree of threats, reducing vulnerability, both people and properties, sensible approach for soil and environment, and a better training and early warning systems to deal with adverse events.

Risk Disaster reduction is everyone’s business and will be determined by the decisions we make, he said, adding that management, mitigation and preparation are needed for this purpose to reach.

Participants agreed that in order to make development activities sustainable risk disasters must be reduced.

The last day´s program also includes a keynote lecture on financial mechanisms for sustainable development and preservation in the Insular Caribbean, and the Symposium on Environment Education Fundamentals and Strategies will take place.
