FELAP President Calls on Cuba to Fight Media Manipulation and Lies

Havana, Jan 21 (Prensa Latina) The Secretary General of the Latin American Federation of Journalists ( FELAP ), Nelson del Castillo, called Monday in Havana to fight manipulation and media lies with which the centers of power monopolize information.

Fake news and campaigns against the peoples who defend their independence and sovereignty are one of US imperialism’s instruments in its domination stance, he pointed out in statements to Prensa Latina during the opening of a two-day international forum, held in Cuba’s National Hotel to debate the current journalism challenges.

For del Castillo, the Cuban Revolution, which triumphed on January 1, 1959, is an example of the aggressiveness unleashed from Washington.

Cuba has been presented all these years as a distortion of reality to damage its image, thus the importance of events like this one, he said about the event hosted by Prensa Latina to remember Operation Truth on its 60th anniversary and the birth of this news agency, also six decades ago.

Operation Truth was a call made by the Revolution’s leader, Fidel Castro, to 400 foreign journalists who learned first-hand details of the justice processes for the crimes committed by the overthrown Fulgencio Batista dictatorship, in the midst of media campaigns and manipulation.

Del Castillo expressed expectations on the meeting which gathers experts and journalists from Latin America and other parts of the world.

I am confident that these two days will be illuminating and enlightening, especially for new generations, about the necessary role of defending the truth and confronting fake news’, he stressed.
