Havana, The Meetings on Globalization and Development Problems, which came to light on the initiative of Fidel Castro and had his presence, constituted a great school of thought, said one Organizer of those events by ANEC.
In a conversation with Prensa Latina, the president of the Association of Cuban Economists and Accountants (ANEC) from 1992 to 2013, Roberto Verrier, declares that at a meeting in Havana of the heads of the Colleges of Economists of Latin America and the Caribbean , which was attended by the historical leader of the Revolution, he suggested to him to create a type of world event that grouped thinkers of all the branches of the economy.
In this forum, which during its decade of existence attracted professionals from more than 80 countries each year, representatives of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, UN entities and those of regional integration such as Alade and SELA, was also attended by Fidel, who participated in all sessions as a speaker.
He took advantage of these meetings to talk to the Economics and Peace Nobel Prize winners and also with the representatives of the Economist’s Colleges of the region, the several agencies and institutions and the participants in general.
According to Verrier’s view such events contributed to draw the attention towards the global and regional economic crisis, the lack of equity in the world, and how to develop relations between countries taking into account existing asymmetries.
The presence of Fidel and the depth of his criteria contributed to the fact that Cuban economists had more prestige and respect in the world. It was a preparation for us with the teaching of a leader of human and political sensitivity, who was aware of the problems of the world.
