Cuba visits change US tourists’ hearts and minds

Tens of thousands of American tourists are flocking to Cuba under a US scheme to promote a positive view of democracy and the free market.

US President Obama reinstated the “people-to-people” programme in 2011, which encouraged visits – licensed by the US Treasury – with the hope that Americans would act as unofficial ambassadors.

But a survey has shown that it is Americans whose views of Cuba and US policy towards it which are changing.

Sarah Rainsford reports from Havana.
