Cuba to Look for Vestiges of Ancient Fort in Mariel Bay

Artemisa, Cuba, Jun 20 (Prensa Latina) Cuban researchers will examine scenarios in Mariel Bay searching for vestiges of a strong Spanish fort San Elias, an expedition planned for late this year, experts announced today.

The construction, ended in 1808, initially had six cannons with a group of gunners, a battery that later extended to 30 pieces, Edel Mayol, historian of the western locality, told Prensa Latina.

The expert stated that before the fort, a tower was built in the opposite bank, a work concluded in 1798 and preserved in good condition.

According to Mayol, the discovery of some fragments of the fort and, maybe, some parts of the cannon battery will add attractions to the development zone in Mariel, a running mega-project.
