Cuba Improves its Education System

Havana, Aug 28 (Prensa Latina) The 2019-2020 school year, to start on September 2, will mark the third stage of the perfection process of the national education system, Education Minister Ena Elsa Velazquez said.

This initiative seeks to make management styles, the curriculum, the work of the educational institutions and different educational modalities more flexible and contextualized, with a view to a qualitative leap in the country’s education.

The training of teachers and professors is playing a key role in this process, which is currently strengthened by the integration of new teachers into the classroom. This ensures that each Cuban province has at least one pedagogical school. Nine Cuban provinces have two of these centers this year, while Havana and Santiago de Cuba have three each.

It is expected that more than 162,000 teachers will return to the classroom this September, to provide coverage of 95%. The remaining posts will be filled through alternatives such as hourly contracted teachers, or through initiatives such as the ‘Educando por amor’ (Teaching for Love) project.

As a result of the salary increase adopted in June this year, of the 4,479 teachers who had presented their resignation, more than 2,200 have decided to continue teaching. Likewise, of 1,858 retirement applications, some 1,047 have decided to teach again, and about 6,191 teachers who had left the sector expressed their willingness to return to the classroom, it was reported.
