Havana, Feb 12 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Tuesday ratified Cuba’s condemnation of a draft resolution submitted by the United States to the United Nations Security Council to step up its crusade against Venezuela.
On his Twitter account, the Cuban president charged that Washington’s initiative aims to pressure Venezuela to accept a humanitarian assistance that is considered an instrument of aggression and interference.
Diaz-Canel’s stance follows statements on Monday by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, who warned that the US draft resolution is aimed at legalizing the campaign against Venezuela by Washington and its allies, who bet on a regime change with the self-proclaimed president, Juan Guaido, as the spearhead, and the humanitarian issue as a pretext.
According to Rodriguez, the text that the US is trying to impose on the UN Security Council, the only body with abiding power in the multilateral organization, contains terms that have justified the latest imperialist wars, including ‘humanitarian situation’, ‘attempts to block humanitarian assistance’ and ‘excessive use of force against peaceful demonstrators’.
The US draft resolution calls to start a political process immediately to hold free and believable presidential elections, which would imply, if approved, that the government of President Nicolas Maduro would not be recognized, although the head of State won the elections categorically in May 2018, a result that has been respected by several governments throughout the world.
The document also expresses ‘deep concern about human rights and the humanitarian situation in Venezuela, including recent attempts to block the delivery of humanitarian aid’.
Russia also submitted an initiative at the UN Security Council, but opposed to Washington’s draft resolution, as it expressed concern about Venezuela’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in light of Washington-led threats.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that it seems improbable that the 15-member body will approve the US draft resolution, and ratified Moscow’s support for the peace efforts being promoted by Mexico and Uruguay.
For a resolution to be approved at the UN Security Council, it needs the favorable vote of the majority of its members and no veto from any of the powers that enjoy that prerogative: the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France.
