Havana, Feb 11 (Prensa Latina) Cuban authorities and institutions on Friday are celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science with messages of gratitude and exchanges with female researchers from different fields.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel acknowledged “so many Cuban women who have dedicated and dedicate sleepless hours to solve problems from Science,” while he highlighted that currently 53 percent of workers in this sector are women.
However, “we still have a long way to go to make their role visible,” the president said on Twitter on the date, established by the United Nations in 2016 with the aim of contributing to the achievement of greater participation and prominence of women in research work and to inspire girls.
For her part, Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, Alba Rosa Perez, congratulated all Cuban women who work in the sector, “research, build, innovate and transform,” while conveying her respect and recognition to women for their contributions so that “Cuba lives,” she noted.
The Institute of Cybernetics, Mathematics and Physics of the capital, together with the Cuban Society of Physics, the Academy of Sciences and the University of Havana organized a virtual panel where prominent women who work in this field tell their stories.
On the world’s Day of Women and Girls in Science with a call to narrow the gender gap, to equity and inclusion, Cuba shows favorable indicators such as the fact that 53 percent of all scholars (more than 86,000) are women.
