Cuba calls at UNESCO for a multisectoral fight against racism

Paris, Oct 14 (Prensa Latina) Cuba on Thursday called at UNESCO for a multi-sectoral fight against racial discrimination and hate speeches in the world and reiterated its commitment to the fight against those scourges.

Addressing a new working day of the Executive Council of the multilateral agency, Cuban diplomat Aimee Pujadas mentioned education, science, culture and communication as essential tools to prevent and combat racism.

The Cuban representative in the forum dedicated to discussing the challenge of discrimination, considered of vital importance in the current scenario to face the increase in hate speeches and incitement to hate crimes through social media and other communication platforms.

She also warned that the Covid-19 pandemic and the crises resulting from it have exacerbated structural inequalities and exclusion, displays of intolerance and expressions of racism.

Our Constitution provides that all people are equal before the law, receive the same protection and treatment from the authorities and enjoy the same rights, freedoms and opportunities, she stressed at the Executive Council.

The official also highlighted the approval in November 2019 of the National Action Plan to combat Racism and Racial Discrimination, as of the criterion that laws and decrees are not enough to erase centuries of discriminatory practices in societies.
