Beijing, Apr 15 ( Prensa Latina ) China criticized and rejected Monday the United States’ obstinacy to sow discord in its relations with Latin America and the Caribbean through irresponsible, provocative and even offensive slanders for that area.
Lu Kang, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, considered the recent statements in Chile by the U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, as pretexts to blame the Asian country’s government.
He recalled that Washington does threaten the peace and stability of that region by wanting to treat it as its backyard, imposing frequent military interventions, sanctions and support for subversion.
‘China brings opportunities (…) to Latin America. Our cooperation is favorable for the development of the economies and peoples of the region. It is based on the concepts of respect, equality and mutual respect.
He reiterated Beijing’s position in support of a peaceful solution and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter for the situation in Venezuela, refuting any kind of meddling in the internal affairs of that state.
Besides, Lu predicted that the White House’s efforts will be fruitless, since Latin Americans will know how to value which side acts as a fake friend, ignores the rules and spreads chaos.
Pompeo said on Friday in Chile that Chinese investments are ‘corrosive’, foster corruption, and that the Asian country is not a reliable partner.
Those statements are part of a strategy being pursued by Donald Trump’s administration as it seeks to regain the influence lost in Latin America and the Caribbean.
