Calls in Canada to end of the US blockade against Cuba

Ottawa, May 29 (Prensa Latina) A new appeal to the Canadian Parliament to call for the end of the US blockade against Cuba is now open for signature by citizens and residents.

Niki Ashton, Parliamentarian of the New Democratic Party, authorized the registration to the House of Commons of this request by Co-President of the Canadian Network of Solidarity with Cuba Isaac Saney in favor of lifting such a hostile blockade.

The request calls Ottawa government to demand Washington to end its unjust blockade, subversion campaign and hostile policy and aggression on Cuba, as well as calls for Cuba to be excluded from the list of states allegedly sponsor terrorism.

The document urges Canada to take immediate action through the implementation of the Foreign Extraterritorial Measures Act, among others, in order to guarantee that local companies and entities do not be in league with the application of the economic US sanctions on Cuba.

The request states that the US blockade, in force for over 60 years, is the main obstacle to Cuba´s social and economic development, and is a violation of international law and human rights.

Since 1992, the US blockade has been overwhelmingly rejected by the international community, including Canada, in a vote at the UN.

Canada has traditionally supported and voted in favor of the Cuban resolution to the UN General Assembly entitled ‘The need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America on Cuba.’

Canada advocates its relations with Cuba are based on equality and respect for sovereignty, independence and the right to self-determination.
