British MP Morris asks Biden to reverse Trump policy on Cuba

London, May 19 (Prensa Latina) British MP Grahame Morris urged US President Joe Biden to reverse Donald Trump’s policy on Cuba and to abstain at the forthcoming vote on the blockade against Cuba at the UN.

As reported by the UK Campaign for Solidarity with Cuba, MP Grahame Morris sent a letter to Biden as president of the Parliamentary Multi-Party Group in charge of relations with Cuba.

On June 23, 2021, the world will vote again at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for a resolution calling for the end of the US blockade against Cuba, so in an international cooperation spirit I do ask you to abstain from voting as the United States already did in 2016, when you served as vice president, Morris wrote.

In Morris’s view, Washington´s abstention would be a clear proof that the Joe Biden administration really wants to put an end to Trump´s aggression and confrontation policy on Cuba and switch it to one guided by humanitarianism, compassion and cooperation.

US stance at UNGA in June has the potential to send a clear message to the world that Trump-era policy on Cuba is coming to an end, Morris remarked.

The British MP also reminded President Biden that Donald Trump applied measures against Cuba causing pointless damage and suffering to the Cuban people that are worsen by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Among the 242 new sanctions, Cuba was included on the US list as state sponsor of terrorism, an action that international observers and many US politicians including former President Barack Obama´s advisers described it as spurious and politicized, Morris recalled.

Morris further urged Biden to follow the UK lead, which keeps a constructive and beneficial relationship with Cuba.

I do believe there are both practical and humanitarian reasons for the United States to establish constructive relations with Cuba especially at a time when the world is presently trying to recover from the pandemic, which, together with blockade and extra sanctions have caused enormous damage and countless difficulties to the Cuban people in last four years.
