The presidents of both Cuba and the U.S. announced an agreement to normalize relations between their two countries. Their words brought memories of the Cold War and an island that captured the imagination of many.
Jose Pertierra’s family was forced out of Cuba by the Castro regime when Jose was just 6-years-old. The Pertierras managed to resettle in the U.S. and young Jose went on to become an immigration lawyer for a primarily Latin American clientele. The Elian Gonzalez custody battle, which returned the Cuban boy to his father in Havana, is just one of many of the cases he has worked on.
While the two countries are separated by less than 100 miles, they are at opposite extremes of the political spectrum. The attorney sat with CCTV America’s Elaine Reyes to reflect on the ground-breaking change of the Cuba-U.S. relationship.
