Young People Worldwide March for Peace in Sochi

By Antonio Rondon Garcia Sochi, Russia, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) Young people from all over the world have marched today for peace at the Olympic Village of this southern Russian resort, and reaffirmed in the central square the solidarity and anti-imperialist nature of the 19th World Festival of Youth and Students.

Amid slogans such as ‘ Fidel, Fidel! What is it with Fidel that Americans cannot put him down,’ hundreds of delegates of the festival exhibited flags of several left-wing Russian and foreign organizations.

A large Cuban representation made latent in that demonstration the rejection to the U.S.-imposed economic, commercial and financial blockade for more than 50 years to the island, a policy that was also denounced by the other participants in the symbolic march.

The president of the World Federation of Democratic Youth, Nikolus Papademetriou, stated that the demonstration was not only for attending the festival, but also to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution.

Such an event not only served as a prelude to the creation of the Soviet Union, but a new stage in the struggle against colonialism and a boost to the anti-imperialist movement, he said.

Other speakers from youth and women’s organizations stated that imperialist forces in the world are creating rapacious wars, and that can be seen in the peoples of the Middle East, Africa and Asia, in need of support and solidarity, they said.

The world youth meeting is dedicated today to the Americas, and lectures on sovereignty, independence and self-determination, an issue that is perfect if we take into account the coup processes produced in recent years in the region, are scheduled to take place.
