Venezuelan Gov’t Paves the Way for Understanding with Opposition

By Livia Rodriguez Delis

Caracas, Dec 24 (Prensa Latina) The Venezuelan government paved the way for understanding with the opposition, when it changed prison sentences to alternative measures for 80 detainees for acts of political violence that took place from 2014 to 2

According to the Agencia Venezolana de Noticias, community work is the first of the options for deprivation of liberty because of its capacity to integrate defendants into labors for the benefit of society and, consequently, their reintegration.

To receive the judicial favor, those linked to the coup d’état strategy of the native ultra-right must only commit themselves to not do over any crime whatsoever, according to the president of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC), Delcy Rodriguez.

During a meeting a day before the Truth, Justice, Peace and Citizen Tranquility Commission with the detainees, the ex-foreign minister assured them that they respond to the state’s policy of respect for human rights, which should not be replaced by prison sentences.

She pointed out that in exhaustive investigations were detected the responsibility for violent actions of several opposition leaders.

According to former Spanish Head of State Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, this is a satisfactory decision that paves the way for a possible agreement between authorities and the right when they meet again on January 11 and 12 as part of the political dialogue in Dominican Republic.

In a statement, Rodriguez Zapatero, one of the international intermediaries in the government-opposition meetings, expressed his support for that proposal recommended by the truth commission; a step that strengthens the expectations of an agreement of democratic coexistence and peace for Venezuela, according to the Spanish news agency Efe.

In addition to coinciding with the criteria of the former Spanish President, the Dominican Republic Foreign Minister, Miguel Vargas, said that in this way the Venezuelan government expressed its willingness to remain on the path of dialogue ‘for a peaceful, democratic and stable solution,’ Vargas stressed .

He pointed out that better scenarios are established for the fourth day of negotiations that will take place in the coming month of January.

Venezuelan press media highlighted that the measure of the truth commission expresses the government’s will to repair the victims and that the country knows the truth about these events.

We will have to see if the right does its part for the tranquility and protection of Venezuelans, who struggle every day with the consequences of an economic war imposed by the United States at the request of the opposition, whose elimination is one of the demands of Bolivarian government’s representation in the aforementioned negotiations.
