Venezuelan Foreign Minister highlights UN experts’ complaint

Caracas, Mar 4 (Prensa Latina) Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza highlighted the complaint by United Nations human rights experts against the United States for the coercive measures imposed on Venezuela.

The foreign minister shared on Twitter the statement by UN officials Alena Douhan and Obiora Okafor, who highlighted that Washington’s emergency declarations that authorize unilateral sanctions are giving rise to serious human rights violations.

The report emphasized that the emergencies declared by the White House can last for decades and ‘instead of true emergencies, they seem like excuses to impose sanctions indefinitely.’

The experts urged the US Government to fully comply with its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to avoid any negative impact on persons subject to authorized sanctions in emergency declarations.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden extended the 2015 Executive Order for a year, declaring Venezuela ‘an unusual and extraordinary threat’ to the security of the United States.

With this decision, the United States intensifies coercive and unilateral measures against Venezuela, preventing the acquisition of medical supplies and food, and make more difficult the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
