Havana, March 29 (Prensa Latina) Massachusetts Democratic Congressman James McGovern stressed Friday in Havana that the United States should lift the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba as well as traveling restrictions of US citizens to the island.
‘We should end the embargo (blockade) and the travel restrictions, I am a strong believer in that the two countries can have better relations’, he told Prensa Latina, shortly after being welcomed at the Foreign Ministry by the Deputy General Director for the United States, Johana Tablada.
According to McGovern, most Americans are in favor of better ties, a scenario that seems to move further away from the growing hostility of the current government in the White House, led by President Donald Trump.
That vision also prevails in Congress, but the Trump administration has another position, with which I disagree, he pointed out.
The Democratic congressman, with an outstanding record in the fostering of good relations between Havana and Washington, insisted on the normal ties with Cuba are in tune with the interests of the northern country.
That is why I am committed to working in that direction, he highlighted.
McGovern fulfills a broad agenda in Cuba, which includes meetings with authorities and students, as well as attending Saturday the opening of the restoration workshop at Finca Vigia, where the US writer and Nobel Prize for Literature Ernest Hemingway lived for several years.
I have been working with the Cubans during the past 15 years in a project to preserve the place and its content, he explained.
