US-Cuba, one year of diplomatic relations

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 20 (acn) One year after Washington and Havana reestablished diplomatic relations, high level visits from the two sides are considered to contribute to the normalization of bilateral links broken over 50 years ago.

Havana´s interest in the progress of bilateral relations has been given by the visits to Washington of Cuban ministers of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, Health, Sports and the vice-president of Civil Aeronautics, according to a report by PL news agency.

Following the visit to Washington by foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez in July 2015, a bilateral ministerial level exchange opened doors, which included the visit to Washington of Foreign Trade minister Rodrigo Malmierca.

It was in early June this year that Cuban Agriculture minister Gustavo Rodriguez met a tight agenda in Washington, Iowa and Nevada on the invitation of his US counterpart Tom Vilsack.

In the U.S., Rodriguez visited the Dupont Pionner organic farm in Polk City, the University of Iowa and the Licolonway Energy, in Nevada. He also met with deputy agriculture secretary Michael Scuse and with other officials.

Also visiting the U.S. was the president of the Cuban Sports Institute Antonio Eduardo Becali, who met with the Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Peloci and with Evan Ryan, deputy secretary of state for Educative and Cultural Affairs.

As part of the visits to Washington, Cuban Health minister Roberto Morales signed there an accord for join work in the fight against Zika and cancer and to coordinate actions towards global security, the treatment of transmissible diseases, cooperation in research and development and I.T.

Reciprocally, Havana was visited by high-level US officials from the Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency, the Border Customs, the Small Business Organization, and most important, President Barack Obama.

But despite these bilateral visits, there are still very crucial issues to be resolved, such as the economic blockade of Cuba and the return to the Cuban people of the territory occupied by Washington in Guantanamo province, which are vital to find the right track toward the normalization of bilateral relation between the United States and Cuba.
