San Salvador, Nov 23 (Prensa Latina) The announced suspension of direct flights between San Salvador and Havana confirms that the United States blockade of Cuba also affects third countries, diplomatic sources confirmed.
The Colombian airline Avianca was the only company that flew directly between San Salvador and Havana, but it announced recently that as of January 15, it would suspend its operations to avoid conflicts with the US Government.
Abel Barzaga, who is in charge of Political and Diplomatic Affairs at the Cuban Embassy in El Salvador, said that Avianca’s also shatters the notion that the blockade is a bilateral issue between the United States and Cuba.
Now the variants are traveling on Copa Airlines, which makes a stopover in Panama, or Interjet, which demands a visa from Mexico, an extra requirement that can be cumbersome.
Avianca suspended ticket sales to Cuba on October 31, claiming that it is ‘a pending issue with the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of Treasury.
