US aggressiveness against Cuba increased despite Covid-19

Moscow, Feb 28 (Prensa Latina) Despite the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the aggressiveness by the United States against Cuba has increased, Lena Loshkina, coordinator of the Committee to Fight the US Blockade in Russia, said recently.

In an exclusive interview with Prensa Latina, Loshkina pointed out that the pandemic chained the economies of most countries in the world, so the impoverishment of broad sectors of the population increased, above all in the weakest countries.

However, it has not changed the aggressiveness of reactionary circles in the United States against Cuba, on the contrary, said Loshkina, who is also a member of the Russia-Cuba Friendship Society.

‘In the past year alone, it (the US) implemented more than 50 measures that tighten the blockade. Preventing the supplies of medicines, ventilators and other pieces of medical equipment to Cuba are inhumane and savage sanctions amid the pandemic,’ he noted.

Regarding the upcoming debate at the United Nations on a resolution against the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, which was postponed for May due to Covid-19, Loshkina pointed out that it will be another demonstration of the unanimous demand to have the blockade lifted.

She warned that most countries have for years demanded an end to the shameful and senseless blockade. There is no doubt that May’s voting will take place in the same scenario,’ she added.

‘Especially if we take into account that in difficult days for the world, Cuba has shown the highest examples of humanism and internationalism by providing medical care to citizens in more than 50 countries,’ she pointed out. Loshkina commented that the movement to grant de Nobel Peace Prize to Cuba’s Henry Reeve Contingent of Doctors Specialized in Situations of Disasters and Serious Epidemics has resounded in the hearts and received support in all five continents.

‘I think that few governments will dare to go against their peoples’ will,’ she underlined.

Asked about the recent tightening of anti-Cuba campaigns, she noted that those groups had their hopes on Trump’s reelection, but after Joe Biden’s victory, they are afraid that Washington’s relations with Havana may improve.

‘To be honest, I am not particularly optimistic. I think that it is not the presidents in the United States and in the world that are making politics but the representatives of the ruling class,’ the Russian activist stressed.

‘On the other hand, the usefulness of the blockade has been proved by time. So we will see the second edition of an attempt at achieving the objectives that the blockade could not solve by other means, as Barack Obama tried.’

Notwithstanding, she stated that the calls to have the blockade against Cuba lifted are sounding everywhere, including the United States, and ignoring them is increasingly more difficult.

Loshkina recalled that in its relations with Cuba, the sanctions on US citizens are the strongest ones and limit their rights. They are banned from traveling, staying in some hotels, sending remittances to relatives, keeping relations with them, among other measures.

‘So it is not surprising that the actions by anti-Cuba reactionary forces have been intensified now. They are trying by all means to prevent the normalization of relations between the two countries,’ Loshkina warned.

She added that the most painful and unpleasant thing is that there are traitors among those whom the Revolution gave them everything. ‘Treason is always more terrible than the acts by open enemies,’ she reflected.

‘But the Cuban Revolution has the people’s vote of confidence and there are many friends in the world to repel that strike,’ she concluded.
