UN: Venezuela Calls for Strengthening General Assembly’s Role

United Nations, Mar 9 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Samuel Moncada called today for strengthening the role and authority of the General Assembly, as part of the process of reforms fostered at the UN.

‘The process of revitalization of the Assembly, which must follow the principles of democracy, transparency and accountability, represents a key element of the reforms,’ said Moncada during his speech in a session on the subject.

He also said that it is increasingly necessary to reverse the tendency of the Security Council to meddle in issues for which this organization is not empowered, as this weakens the role of this council as a forum for debate par excellence.

In Moncada’s view, the General Assembly must remain as a privileged platform to foster dialogue and cooperation seeking solutions to the problems that damage peace and the economic and social development of the countries.

‘The Venezuelan delegation subscribes the declaration of the Movement of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and echoes the call to assess the implementation of the resolutions of the General Assembly as an important step to strengthen this agency’s role,’ he said.

Moncada also praised the dialogues between members of the Assembly and candidates and nominees of the most recent elections of the highest representative of the United Nations.
