Caracas, mar 22 (Prensa Latina) The independent expert of the United Nations (UN) Alfred de Zayas described as criminal the economic sanctions imposed by the United States government on Venezuela.

He assured that for the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order the South American nation must request from the International Criminal Court an investigation into crimes against humanity committed by Washington by imposing restrictive measures against Caracas.

The escalation of attacks against the sovereignty of Venezuela by the White House intensified in March 2015, when the then President Barack Obama declared a national emergency due to the ‘unusual and extraordinary threat’ that this country represented for security and foreign policy of United States.

From that moment on, Washington issued sanctions against various officials of the Bolivarian government, and in August, 2017 attacked the heart of the Venezuelan economy by prohibiting US banks from making transactions with the executive and with the state-owned Petroleos de Venezuela.

In the most recent episode of this interventionist attack, the US president, Donald Trump, approved this week an executive order by which he prohibited companies and citizens of the northern nation from making transactions with the cryptocurrency the petro.

Alfred de Zayas said that the sanctions against Venezuela aggravated the economic crisis caused by the collapse of the price of oil, to the point of causing shortages of medicines and food, shortages of supply and delays in the distribution of these products.

When planned and deliberated, these punitive measures entails a criminal responsibility, a situation that must be submitted to the UN General Assembly with a view to adopt resolutions declaring these actions illegal and criminal, the expert specified.

He also announced that the independent UN rapporteur on unilateral coercive measures, Idriss Jazairy, will conduct a visit to Venezuela this year to evaluate the impact of the sanctions imposed by the United States on the ground.
