This March I went to Cuba for work. The trip occurred at an incredibly interesting time — shortly after President Obama and Castro announced the thawing of US-Cuba relations. Our group had the opportunity to travel outside of Havana and the colonial town of Trinidad was one of my favorite places we visited.
The town’s square, Plaza Mayor, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the buildings surrounding the square are beautifully preserved. Many of them serve as museums now. While in Trinidad, we ate at Sol Ananda, a privately owned restaurant, also known as a paladar, and it was one of the best meals of the trip. Definitely recommend the house special, a shrimp curry.
Just outside of Trinidad is Valle de los Ingenios, or the Valley of the Sugar Mills. We stopped by the Manaca-Iznaga estate and climbed the sugar mill’s old tower. After the climb, we rewarded ourselves with lots of fresh coconut. Not a bad way to end the day.
