Spotlight on Performance Takes Children from Harlem to Cuba

For the Spotlight on Performance committee, which focuses providing a hands-on performance and visual arts education to 2nd through 5th graders in Harlem, the theme of 2015-2016 is “Music Videos.”

Volunteers have been educating the students on different types of music videos, how to tell stories through visuals combined with music, and the many elements that are necessary to make a music video.

With this theme in mind, the committee decided to inspire the students through a trip to Cuba Vibra!, a production at the New Victory Theater celebrating Cuban music and dance from the ’50s through present day. Prior to the show, the students had a chance to play with instruments, learn basic Cuban dance techniques, and work as a team to make their own music and dance collaboration.

Building upon what they learned from Cuba Vibra!, students are tapping into their own inner musicians as they make their own instruments and participate in karaoke sessions and lip sync battles. By the end of this year, they will have created their own music video that they can share with their families and friends!
