Sister Cities of Franklin and Williamson County whetted appetites for Cuban travel with its bimonthly Passport to the World gathering on Sunday, July 10. Attendees sampled Cuban fare from Back to Cuba Café and enjoyed the spicy sounds of the Caribbean island.
Sheyla Paz Hicks, a native of Cuba, was among the entourage that traveled with President Barack Obama on his historic trip to Cuba in March. She served as tour guide and educator to a packed room at the Williamson County Public Library in Franklin. The crowd of interested guests ranged from students to globe-trotters, all anxious to learn more about the Caribbean island, which was off limits to Americans for decades.
The nonprofit Sister Cities organization is a gem, facilitating student exchange programs, as well as relationships between Franklin and its sister cities in other countries.
Among those in the crowd Sunday were Patricia and Robert Kriebel, Linda and Mayor Ken Moore, Pam Lewis, Joan Lewis, Pearl Bransford, Charles Lee, Camila Fyler and Cecilie Melo-Romie.
