Scientist Calls on UN to Seize Opportunity to Save the Oceans

United Nations, Feb 14.- Marine scientist Lisa Speer urged today the international community to take advantage of the opportunity to save the oceans from irrational use and guarantee future generations the enjoyment of their valuable resources.

“We are at a key moment to reverse the depletion of marine wealth as a result of overexploitation”, the director of the International Program of the Oceans of the environmental organization Council for the Defense of Natural Resources, told Prensa Latina.

In the context of her participation in a forum convened by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the UN General Assembly, the activist called to show commitment to the sustainable management of these ecosystems.

Speer emphasized the opportunity represented by the inclusion of a goal on the conservation of the oceans in the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, an instrument of inclusive progress in harmony with nature adopted in September 2015 by the 193 Member States of the United Nations.

The IPU and the General Assembly hosted yesterday a two-day event to discuss panels and workshops on the protection of the oceans, a gathering of nearly 300 lawmakers from various continents.

According to the US expert, the forum represents a starting point for the holding in June of a UN conference on water bodies covering more than 70 percent of the planet’s surface and is an essential element for human survival and development.

We have high expectations at that June conference, she stressed.

Speaking to Prensa Latina, the founder and director of the World Oceans Observatory, Peter Neill, called for greater political will on the part of States to address the issue of conservation and wise use of marine ecosystems. (PL)
