Santiago de Cuba hospital has the largest rooftop photovoltaic park in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 27 (ACN) The Doctor Juan Bruno Zayas General Hospital, in the Cuban eastern city of Santiago, has the largest rooftop photovoltaic solar park in the country, an important step forward in the use of Renewable Energy Sources in the province.

The weekly Sierra Maestra stated that this park benefits hundreds of patients hospitalized in this important public health institution, which has more than 700 beds and offers services in 35 specialties.

The work is part of the Environmental Sustainability Project in the Cuban East, with the collaboration of the Cuban Society for the Promotion of Renewable Energy Sources and Environmental Respect (solar Cuba) and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID).

Rogelio Wanton, provincial director of the Science and Technology Forum, said that this is a Chinese technology, grid injection formed by 384 panels with a power of 96 kilowatt (kw) peak, which occupies an area of 600 square meters on the roofs of the cistern and laundry care center.

By capturing solar energy for approximately five hours a day, the photovoltaic park guarantees the total consumption of 14 rooms and the laundry, which favors around 700 patients.

The system has produced 55 MW, for a saving of 14 tons (t) of fuel, and prevented 62 t of CO2 to go into the atmosphere, Wanton said.

The Juan Bruno Zayas Surgical Clinic, as it is also known, is a high consumer of energy, like all Cuban hospitals, and this alternative energy is used to provide good service to the patient in the cooking of food, hot water for the bath of patients as well as lighting of the rooms.

In Santiago de Cuba there are around 1,282 photovoltaic systems, of which 1,129 currently operate, benefiting schools, family doctors, hospitals and television rooms, among other things, with a monthly generation of 276.13 MWh/month, for a saving of 77.32 Tep/month (Ton equivalent of oil).

Given the country’s energy situation, renewable energy sources are undoubtedly essential complements to achieve energy stability and sustainability, emphasized Sierra Maestra.
