Moscow, Nov 3 (Prensa Latina) Russia and our country condemn the United States’ policies of unilateral sanctions against other nations, said on Saturday the president of the Councils of State and Ministers of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez.
‘I think both parties are satisfied with the current level of relations between Cuba and the Patriarchate,’ the Cuban leader said after a meeting in this capital with the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill, the Russian news agency TASS reported.
We share common values. I would like to assure you that we will work to maintain and strengthen these relations, said the Head of State, who is making an official visit to Russia since Thursday.
Now, together with this country, ‘Cuba condemns the unilateral sanctions that the United States applies against Russia, against Cuba and other countries,’ he declared.
The Cuban president also thanked the head of the Russian Orthodox Church for the gesture of having chosen Havana for his meeting with Pope Francis, which was held in February 2016.
For his part, Kirill stressed that the first time that Fidel Castro came to visit, I remember very well how, together with the people of Leningrad, because I was born there, we received him in the streets with Cuban flags and slogans of ‘Cuba, yes! Yankees, no!’, he narrated.
‘I know that this is your first trip outside of Latin America and we greatly appreciate that your first visit was Russia,’ he said.
The Russian people have a special attitude towards Cuba, which is still related to their heroic struggle for freedom, he stressed.
In addition, the Patriarch stressed that Cuba and Russia have more than 200 years of relations, with a ‘special character’ after the victory of the Cuban Revolution.
I would like to emphasize especially that this kind attitude towards Cuba is maintained because many people, many Russians participated actively in the destiny of your country, he said.
This experience of sharing in your struggle, in your life, is transmitted even from parents to children. Therefore, there are persistent sympathies between Russian society towards Cuba and the Cuban people, he added.
In addition, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church thanked Diaz-Canel Bermudez for the fact that Cuba made possible the first meeting of his Church with the Roman Catholic Church.
It seemed to me that Cuba is really an ideal meeting place, a completely neutral territory. It is far from Europe and, therefore, from all our historical conflicts, he explained.
It is not an orthodox or strictly Catholic country, because the state is secular and a significant part of the population shares the Marxist ideology, he stressed.
Diaz-Canel Bermudez analyzes on Saturday with the Russian Prime Minister, Dmitri Medvedev, the materialization of joint economic projects, as part of an official visit to this country, in the framework of an international tour by several nations.
