Russia Appreciates Cuba’s Democratic Constitutional Referendum

Moscow, Feb 28 (Prensa Latina) Russia highlighted Thursday the democratic nature of the process of discussion and approval in referendum of Cuba”s new Constitution and reaffirmed the strategic nature of bilateral relations.

A referendum was held in the Republic of Cuba on February 24 and, according to its results, with the support of more than 85 per cent of the votes, a new Constitution was approved, as stated by the Foreign Minister’s spokeswoman, Maria Zararova.

We are convinced that the continuity of our approaches on the world will maintain its contribution to the continued growth of the strategic partnership between Russia and Cuba in various forms and manifestations’, remarked the official.

The aproval of the Magna Carta, prepared in the light of proposals formulated in a three-month discussion that preceded it, took place within the framework of a democratic process, through the free expression of the Cubans’ will, the spokeswoman stated.

Thus, the independent election of Cubans in favor of an optimal and more preferable development model, state structure and socio-political in the current stage, meets the requirements of socioeconomic transformations implemented in Cuba, she added.

For the official, the new fundamental law reaffirmed the continuity of Cuba’s position in foreign policy, based on strict compliance with the norms and principles of international law.

This includes respect for sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of other states, Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman commented.
