Raul Castro Presides Activity in the Mountains of Santiago de Cuba

Santiago de Cuba, Jul 25 (Prensa Latina) The First Secretary of the Cuba Communist Party, Army General Raul Castro Ruz, is presiding today in the municipality of the Second Front the provincial celebration of the 65th anniversary of the assault on the Moncada Garrison.

Along with thousands of locals from this area, which is entirely the work of the Revolution, Raul Castro shares this patriotic day marked by gratitude for the process of economic and social transformation initiated after the triumph in January 1959.

On March 11, 1958, this rebel headquarters was created whose advanced premises of organization and development became the forerunner of the current municipality, located in the Sierra Cristal Mountains, in some 12,000 square kilometers of these mountain ranges, covered territories of Alto Songo, Mayari, Sagua de Tanamo, Baracoa, Yateras, Guantanamo and San Luis, with the subsequent incorporation of Banes and Antilla, from the current province of Holguin.

Under the name of Frank Pais Garcia, a young leader of the underground struggle assassinated by troops of the dictator Fulgencio Batista in this city on July 30, 1957, the operation of the rebel front was a significant contribution to the militant actions leading to the revolutionary victory in the final days of 1958.

Tomorrow, in the polygon of the former military fortress assaulted by Fidel Castro and young revolutionaries on July 26, 1953, from which the definitive stage of the struggles for liberation in Cuba began, the central commemorative act of that heroic deed will be celebrated.
