Pinar del Rio, Cuba, May 16 (Prensa Latina) In a world heritage site, the sustainable development project For People and Nature, today benefits the residents of the town of Viñales, with the operation of agroecological production spaces.
The creation of farms where friendly environmental techniques predominate, is one of the achievements of this initiative, their coordinaters told Prensa Latina.
According to experts, this program is based on the implementation of soil conservation techniques, the training of farmers in agricultural practices in harmony with the environment, crop rotation cycles in the same area and the promotion of various crops.
Reforestation of degraded lands and the increase of forests by planting species of pine groves, cedar, mahogany, majagua and fruit trees, also stand out among the actions in the municipality of Viñales, whose valley and people have the status of World Heritage Cultural Landscape.
Such experience ensures a greater availability of food to the residents of the area -160 kilometers west of Havana-, thanks to the results of tobacco plantations, affirmed Yamira Díaz, researcher of land demarcation and promoter of the project.
As an additional advantage, she mentioned the improvement of the damaged land by natural and anthropogenic factors (human activity), as well as the increase of life quality of the locals, mostly devoted to farm work.
