One of eyewitnesses of relations between Cuba and US dies at 81

Washington, Jul 8 (Prensa Latina) Mike East, one of the eyewitnesses in the breaking-off and restoration of the diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba, died in June in his native Memphis at the age of 81, it was reported in Washington on Wednesday.

East and his companions, Jim Tracy and Larry Morris, lowered the flag flying at the United States Embassy in Havana, when the government of then President Dwight Eisenhower broke ties in 1961.

Fifty-four years later, on August 14, 2015, the three Marines also hoisted the US flag in the same embassy during the reopening ceremony after the diplomatic relations were restored on July 20.

East’s family informed that the former marine passed away on June 24 from lung cancer.
