Normal Relations with Cuba is in US Interest; Congressman Says

Havana, Mar 30 (Prensa Latina) US Congressman James McGovern (Democrat for Massachusetts) said in Havana that a scenario of normal relations with Cuba is part of his country’s interests.

‘I think that relating to each other is something good. The United States should lift the blockade and travel restrictions on US citizens,’ the representative who on Saturday continues his working visit to Cuba, told Prensa Latina.

According to McGovern, during his new stay in Cuba, he came to talk with local officials and get acquainted with the reality of the island.

On Friday, the Democratic congressman spoke with Johana Tablada, deputy director general for the United States Foreign Ministry, and students from the Higher Institute of International Relations.

Regarding the meeting with young Cubans, he said it served to address several issues about what is happening at the international arena.

According to McGovern, most US citizens support normal bilateral ties, a opinion also shared at the Democrat-dominated House of Representatives.

However, he acknowledged that promoting initiatives in favor of better relations, which would include ending the blockade imposed for almost 60 years and prohibiting the North Americans from doing tourism in the Caribbean nation, might not be so easy in a Senate controlled by Republicans, and would face the obstacle that the current administration represents.

Donald Trump’s administration doesn’t think like I do, he told Prensa Latina.
