Monaco’s Princess Caroline visited Cuban National Ballet headquarters in Havana Friday, where she held a private meeting with its legendary director, ballerina Alicia Alonso, local media reported.
Caroline toured the company with Jean-Christophe Maillot, director of Monaco’s Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, watching a rehearsal and meeting with Alonso, the official Cuban news agency Prensa Latina said.
Alonso, 93, who is nearly blind and has trouble walking, was once considered one of the world’s preeminent ballerinas.
She still runs the company that she founded in 1948, accompanying its international performances.
Les Ballets de Monte Carlo is scheduled to debut a version of “Cinderella” Friday night at Cuba’s Havana Theater Festival.
The festival includes performances by companies from 22 countries.
