Mexico makes drug purchase official via UN and eliminates monopolies

Mexico, Oct 29 (Prensa Latina) Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Thursday announced an agreement reached with the United Nations guaranteeing the purchase and supply of medicines and eliminating the control of monopolies in such activity.

In his morning press conference at the National Palace, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Mexico can now buy all medicines around the world, where they are available to buy, with high-quality and at a good price. It will solve a long-standing problem.

It is now up to them, he added, to try to guarantee the provisioning and can also be provided in health centers, hospitals and public clinics for free so as to make people’s right to health a reality.

Mexico’s President said that it cost a lot of work because strong interests were deeply involved in, from the pharmaceutical distributors and public officials and politicians.

We are talking about MXN$1 billion (over 4,7 billion dollars), and there is some evidence that 10 companies monopolized all drug sale.

There is no legal limitation as until just a few months ago when it was not possible to carry out the purchase of drugs abroad in real terms.
