Large Cuban Delegation to Junior World Athletics Championships

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 10 (acn) Cuba increased to 18 the number of athletes who will represent it at the Junior World Athletics Championships, scheduled to be held from July 22 to 27 in Eugene, United States. The triple jumper Lazaro Martinez, last year world cadet champion, tops the list of Cuban delegation to attend this important event.

The list of those enrolled from the beginning was also made up by Yorgelis Rodríguez (heptathlon), Sahily Diago (800 meters), Liadagmis Povea (triple jump), Santiago Ford (decathlon) and Saily Viart (shot put).

To them we must add Andy Diaz (triple jump), Arialis Gandulla (200 meter), Jose Gaspar (400m hurdles) and Gilda Casanova (400 m).

According to the National Athletic Commission, eight other athletes will participate in the universal contest and those are the cases of Zuriáman Echevarría and Leandro Zamora, both in 400 meter hurdles, José Luis Despaigne (long jump) and Dianelis Duttil (high jump).

Likewise there will also be present in Eugene the sprinters Reynier Mena and Yaniel Carrero (100 and 200 m respectively) and Roger Valentin Iribarne (110m hurdles).

Cuba, in Junior World Athletics Championships, accumulates 23 gold, 25 silver and 19 bronze medals, which place it seventh of all time.

In the last edition of Barcelona 2012, the harvest was of three titles and a bronze medal.

In that competition in Spanish soil, the Cuban monarchs were the aforementioned Rodriguez in heptathlon, triple jumper Pedro Pablo Pichardo and Yordan O’Farrill (110m hurdles).
