Gay Men’s Chorus Of D.C. Makes Historic Visit To Cuba

“The chorus will serve as cultural ambassadors, demonstrating the power of music for social change,” read a statement from GMCW.

The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington D.C. (GMCW), in partnership with Youth for Understanding (YFU), will become the first ever gay chorus to visit Cuba.

Members of the Chorus will embark on a five-concert tour to promote LGBTQ awareness, in a country that was only recently removed from the State Department’s list of terror-sponsored governments.

Youth for Understanding is a non-profit organization that advocates for intercultural understanding and respect.

A statement from GMCW says that, “The partnership between YFU as an educational entity and GMCW as a musical entity gives this delegation political sanction, where travel to Cuba is still limited to educational, religious, cultural, humanitarian and family purposes.”

The GMCW will sing songs of empowerment from social movements in an effort to raise awareness of the problems facing LBGTQ communities.

GMCW will begin their Cuba tour with a performance on Friday July 10 at Trinity Cathedral in Miami, Florida.
