Washington, Feb 26 (Prensa Latina) With its attempted coup d’état in Venezuela, the Government of the United States violates international law with the complicity of big media organizations, former United Nations Rapporteur Alfred de Zayas said on Tuesday.
‘We should wonder, Do we want a coup d’état in Venezuela? What legitimacy would a government of (self-proclaimed President Juan) Guaido have?’ De Zayas said in an interview with the TV and radio program Democracy Now.
The expert noted that dialogue between the Nicolas Maduro Government and opposition sectors could have had good results, but it failed because in the last moment, the opposition leader Julio Borges refused to sign the document.
‘Now, there is an unconstitutional situation, because the legislative power is assuming attributions that are a responsibility of the executive and judicial powers,’ he underlined.
As the UN rapporteur, I had the opportunity, when I visited Venezuela in November and December 2017, to meet with all stakeholders, he recalled.
The analyst also denounced the role played by hegemonic media organizations in the campaign against Venezuela.
They have been accomplices of this attempted coup, through a labyrinth of fake news. They create an atmosphere to make public opinion accept the change in command imposed by the United States, De Zayas stated.
The current situation reminds us of the period prior to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, when the big media circles backed up the lies and manipulations by then US President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, he pointed out. De Zayas noted that the opposition ‘should be prevented from demanding a regime change as they themselves are worsening the situation’.
In that regard, he condemned the financial blockade and the economic warfare against Venezuela, and added that it is similar to the one waged against the Salvador Allende Government in Chile from 1970 to 1973.
‘If the opposition considers itself democratic, it has to play the democratic game and participate in the elections. But over the past few years, it has decided to boycott the elections,’ he stressed.
