Havana, Nov 21 (PL) Phd. Miriam Nicado Garcia is the new rector of the University of Havana and with her appointment she becomes the first woman to assume this responsibility, local media reported today.
Nicado Garcia is a member of the Council of State and a member of the National Assembly, and before her investiture she served as rector of the University of Computer Science.
Dr. Gustavo Cobreiro Suárez, who served as rector of the university in recent years, will assume other functions.
Founded on January 5, 1728 by Dominican friars belonging to the Order of Preachers, the University of Havana is the oldest higher education institution in Cuba and one of the first in Latin America.
This high school works to extend to society the knowledge of the university community, following its principles of collaboration with a high sense of responsibility and vocation of service.
