First Cuban Vice President Meets with Vietnamese Leaders

Hanoi, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) Visiting Vietnam on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s visit, Cuba’s first Vice President, Salvador Valdes, held courtesy meetings with the country’s top leaders.

The also member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba met with the Secretary General of the Communist Party of Vietnam (PCV), Nguyen Phu Trong; the Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc; the head of the National Assembly, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan; and the President, Tran Dai Quang, in that order.

Before, he laid a wreath before the monument to the Martyrs and the mausoleum to Ho Chi Minh, and held official talks with Truong Hoa Binh, permanent Deputy Prime Minister and member of the Political Bureau of the PCV.

In all the meetings, the hosts highlighted that the visit of Fidel Castro in 1973 marked a milestone in the exemplary relations of fraternity and cooperation between the two countries.

Valdes said that his presence in Vietnam is a sign of the will of the Party, the Government and the Cuban State to give new impetus to trade agreements and bilateral collaboration, and to deepen the close friendship that cemented events such as Fidel Castro’s visit.

The historical leader of the Cuban Revolution was the first and only statesman who during the times of the war crossed the border between the north and south portions of Vietnam, at that time divided by the parallel 17 at the height of the provinces of Quang Binh and Quang Tri.

In the evening of the long day of this Thursday, the Cuban leader traveled to the first of those territories, where the authorities of the PCV and the local government paid him a warm reception.

Manana will visit Dong Hoi, capital of Quang Binh where he will participate in an event at the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital, built and equipped with contributions from the island shortly after the visit of Fidel Castro.

From there he will continue to Quang Tri, where he will visit several war scenarios in which the Commander in Chief was present, and will attend the inauguration of a square called Fidel Castro in Dong Ha, the capital of the province.

On this open area will be unveiled a bronze bust of whoever was a fervent contributor and admirer of Vietnam’s heroic deed for independence and reunification.
