Quito, Feb 7 (Prensa Latina) An official act led by electoral and government authorities of Ecuador inaugurated today the general elections day in this country, the first to be held in Latin America in 2021.
The president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Diana Atamaint, was in charge of declaring the voting process open, in the event held at the national headquarters of the institution, located in the center-north of this capital, which was attended by the vice president of the republic, Maria Alejandra Muñoz.
‘This February 7, 2021, we reach the most important day of the exercise of democracy as a result of collective actions planned and agreed upon for the benefit of citizens’, said Atamaint, also before ministers, the police and military high command, as well as observers, among other guests.
The head of the CNE pointed out that 13,099 150 people are summoned to the polls, 12, 688 911 of them in Ecuador and 410 239 in the districts abroad, to elect the president and vice-president, 137 members of the National Assembly (parliament) and five Andean parliamentarians.
In order to guarantee the suffrage, the highest electoral body ordered the installation of 39,915 Voting Boards, of which 38,979 are distributed throughout the Ecuadorian territory and 936 in different countries where nationals are living, he added.
Likewise, he assured that the organization of the elections was carried out within the framework of reforms to the Electoral Law and in the midst of an economic crisis, aggravated by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, for which it was necessary to give operative responses.
On her side, the Vice President of the Republic, Maria Alejandra Muñoz, affirmed that the national government, with the support of the United Nations Development Program, began the methodology of the transition process, in order to guarantee the delivery of all the systematized information to the new executive, whose swearing ceremony will take place on May 24.
