Organic honey now ranks as Cuba’s fourth most valuable agricultural export, according to the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization. That puts honey ahead of sugar and coffee in exports, but behind fish, tobacco and alcohol.
Historically, Cuban farmers have been unable to afford pesticides due to a lack of currency and the U.S. trade embargo. In 2014, Cuba produced 7,200 tons of organic honey with a value of about $23.3 million, according to Reuters.
