Cuba’s medical achievements in Covid-19 fight extolled in Serbia

Belgrade, May 24 (Prensa Latina) Serbian media have highlighted the progress of biotechnology in Cuba, where medicines that are effective to fight the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus are produced.

‘Two Cuban drugs have significantly reduced the coronavirus mortality,’ the influential Politika daily headlined a story containing information from Cuban authorities regarding the contribution of these medications to reduce the deaths by Covid-19.

It notes that one of them is Itolizumab, a monoclonal antibody produced in Cuba, while the other medicine is a kind of peptide that the Cuban biotechnological industry has developed and was initially tested to treat the second phase of rheumatoid arthritis.

Based on international media outlets, the daily reproduces the scientists’ warning that further researches should still be carried out to reach conclusions about the effectiveness and safety of the two medicines.

Some eight Serbian media outlets echoed this information and noted that 1,916 Covid-19 cases were reported in Cuba, which has a population of nearly 11 million, since the beginning of the pandemic, with only 81 deaths.
