Cuban wrestlers train in the US before World Championship

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 2 (acn) Cuban athletes who will participate in the World Wrestling Championship to be held in Las Vegas, USA, from September 7 to 12 are developing a training base in that country.

The Cuba wrestlers are led by the five-time world and double Olympic champion Mijail Lopez, in the 130 kg of Greco-Roman style.
That tournament will have the added importance of granting five seats in each division for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Julio Mendieta, head coach of men’s national wrestling team, told ACN that this will be the first qualifying event for the summer event, so they aspire to go in search of the greatest possible number of berths.

He also noted that there will be another chance for the Americas wrestlers in a tourney based in Colombia, in March next year, which will award tickets to the gold and silver medalists.

The list of the Caribbean island to the World Championship in the Greco Roman style is also made up by Ismael Borrero (59 kilos), Miguel Martinez (66) and Yasmany Lugo (98).

Meanwhile, the free-style team is lead by Reineris Salas ( 86), world double silver medalis; Yowlys Bonne ( 57), Livan Lopez (74) and Javier Cortina (97), also winners of medals at that level, besides the novice Franklyn Marén (65).

Finally, the women squad includes the experienced Katherine Vidiaux (63) and Lisset Echevarria (75) in a tournament that will be attended by more than 650 athletes from 88 countries.
