Havana, Sep 24 (Prensa Latina) The economic blockade imposed on Cuba by the U.S. government is affecting the island in all sectors, and is having a particular impact on education, high school students stated on Monday.
Ariel Alejandro Diaz, a student at the Jose Marti Pre-University School in Havana, explained to Prensa Latina that the restrictions on the procedures for international scholarships and obstacles in managing the study material and school property stand out among the aspects in which it affects the Cuban educational sector.
Ana Barbara Fuentes, from the same school, also commented on the implications of the blockade, just over a month before the United Nations General Assembly votes on a new draft resolution to demand the ending of these sanctions, an initiative similar to the one categorically approved since 1992 in this meeting.
According to Fuentes, the blockade affects access to educational resources, as well as sensitive areas such as health.
The United States has imposed an economic, commercial and financial blockade on Cuba for almost 60 years, which has caused losses of over 4 billion dollars between April 2017 and March 2018, according to the island’s report facing the upcoming UN vote.
The students participated this Monday in a consultation on the new constitution draft, a process which takes place in Cuba from August 13 to November 15.
In this regard, they highlighted the Cuban democratic system listens to every sector of society, including students.
