Cuban Parliamentarians Discuss the Country’s Priorities

Havana, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) Deputies to the National Assembly of People’s Power of Cuba began here on Sunday two days of debates in the 10 permanent commissions on economic and socio-economic development issues.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel attends the sessions, as well as ministers, deputy ministers and other officials of the country.

The legislators discuss in the Conference Center of this capital the fulfillment of the Plan of the Economy in 2018 and the execution of the budget.

Likewise, projections for next year on both issues and the fight against illegalities and corruption will be examined. No less important is the analysis of the budget and the Plan of the Economy and its projections; besides the progress of the implementation of the guidelines for updating the socio-economic model of Cuba.

The group in charge of the Industry, Constructions and Energy will discuss the monitoring of investments in those areas and the execution of the National Hydraulic Plan. In the case of the agri-food sector, the situation of the sugar harvest and the substitution of imports will be analyzed.

For its part, the commission of Education, Culture, Science, Technology and Environment analyzes the results of the implementation of the government program to address climate change, an initiative called ‘Tarea Vida’ (‘ Task Life’). It will also address the priorities of the Academy of Sciences.

In the group dedicated to Health and Sports, the deputies discuss problems such as smoking and its incidence in cancer, and the Cuban epidemiological scenario; the one of National Defense evaluates the impact of the accidents in the economy and the effectiveness of the General Customs of the Republic in the fight against the drug trafficking and other illegal practices in the border.

The commission of Constitutional and Legal Affairs will listen to reports of the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic and the Supreme People’s Court.

On Sunday and Monday, the International Relations, Attention to Services and Attention to Youth, Children and Equal Rights of Women commissions will also be held.

The two days of work of the committees precede those that will take place in the Parliament from Tuesday to Thursday to address the process of a total reform of the Constitution, after the popular consultation held throughout the country from August 13 to November 15 to enrich its content in neighborhoods, work and study centers and abroad.

On Friday the second session of the 9th Legislature of the National Assembly of People’s Power will take place, in which it is expected that the deputies approve the constitution that will be submitted to a referendum in February, in which, if it is approved by the majority of the Cubans, it would replace the one in force since 1976.
