Havana, (Prensa Latina) Cuban long jumper Juan Miguel Echavarría added another vote in the sports poll conducted by Prensa Latina to choose the best athletes of the year in Latin America and the Caribbean, and continues to lead the men”s section.
Echavarria, a 20-year-old athlete who has been undefeated during the entire season, won a vote from the Cuba’s Radio Progreso on Tuesday.
Echavarria won the gold medal in the World Indoor Championship in Birmingham, the United Kingdom, and set a record in the season (8.66 meters) in the Czech city of Ostrava.
Besides, he competed in an indoor event in Stockholm although he was injured, and jumped 8.83 meters with the wind in favor, so his record was not ratified.
Radio Progreso also chose Yaime Perez for Best Female Athlete, a Cuban competitor who won the Continental Cup of the International Association of Athletics Federations in Ostrava and the Diamond League, beating in both cases Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic, who was the best athlete in her specialty over the past few years.
With the vote by Radio Progreso, the Perez surpassed Colombian triple jumper Caterine Ibargüen, who won her fifth Diamond League title in 2018, in addition to her victory in the IAAF Continental Cup and the Central American and Caribbean Championships, in the long jump and triple jump contests.
In the Best Team of the Year category, Radio Progreso chose the boxing team Domadores de Cuba, who won their third title in the World Series of Boxing, in which they defeated the Astana Arlans team from Uzbekistan in the finals.
With this vote, the Cuban boxing team widened its edge over the Peruvian soccer and Brazilian volleyball teams in the men’s and women’s categories.
Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, world record holder in the 100- and 200-meter races, is the athlete who has won more times, with eight awards.
